PLEASANT VALLEY, MO (KCTV) -
Numerous wrecks were reported throughout the Kansas City area Friday morning as freezing rain coated surfaces.
One of the crashes occurred when a North Kansas City School District bus slid off the road at Pleasant Valley and Church roads. No one was hurt, and the bus was eventually freed and returned on its travels.
No life-threatening injuries were reported in any of the crashes across the area. Interstate 35 was shut down for a time in western Johnson County.
Lee's Summit School District canceled classes for its elementary schools and early childhood classes. Middle and high school students were already in class when the roads turned bad. They were kept in class Friday morning, but were dismissed two hours early.
Because of the rain, many municipal governments couldn't put down additional salt because the rain would wash the treatment away. There was treatment on the roads from previous storms.
Hardware stores and other retail outlets said customers were busy buying items such as ice melt, shovels and snow blowers. Ice melt was particularly popular, with one store saying clerks sold 600 bags on Friday.
KCTV5 meteorologist Hallie Shulman says freezing rain has turned to cold rain. Falling temperatures mean any water on the roads will refreeze overnight.
Rain will turn to a sleet-snow combination after sunset, and will continue throughout the overnight hours. Highest snow accumulations are expected on the Missouri side of the metro, east and north of downtown. Most locations in the Kansas City metro will see less than 2 inches of snow or just freezing rain.
Although several inches of snow could possibly accumulate in some areas, the biggest threat will come from the refreezing of Friday's rain. You are urged to use caution while driving and out and about and on slick driveways and sidewalks.
