Brazen robbers point guns at customers, clerks at 2 thrift stores

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Police are asking for help finding gunmen who robbed two area thrift stores this week.

City Thrift saw its store at 77th Street and Wornall Road robbed about 7 p.m. Wednesday. About two hours later, two gunmen struck the store at 11186 Antioch Road in Overland Park.

Police are looking into whether the gunmen robbed both places. Some residents fear that the same gunmen are responsible for a recent Burger King robbery near the Overland Park thrift store.

Overland Park police issued surveillance photos in hopes of capturing the two men who put bandanas over their faces. In one picture, you can see a suspect hold a gun in an employee's face as customers, including a teen boy, look on in horror.

"Several shoppers were in the store including a couple of kids and at the time they came in and ordered everyone to the back of the store," Overland Park police officer Gary Mason said.

The manager was ordered to open the safe.

Customers said they consider it very sad that someone would rob thrift stores.

"It's a pretty selfish act. Robbing in general is a pretty selfish act especially with it being a thrift store," said customer Dakota Stone.

Store officials said they are glad that no one was hurt.

Both men were African-American. One was described as light skinned and about 6 feet 4 inches tall. He was wearing a gray Adidas hoodie, jeans, yellow and black tennis shoes and blue latex clothes.

The second was described as between 18 and 30 years old, he was 6 foot tall and had a heavy build. He was wearing a black sweatshirt, white hat, white T-shirt, black pants, white shoes and heavy winter-type gloves.
