Winter storm watch issued for KC area

PLEASANT HILL, MO (KCTV) -

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for most of the KCTV5 viewing area.

A narrow band of moderate to heavy snow will begin Friday afternoon and last through Friday night. The snow will diminish and move out of the area by Saturday.

"The potential does exist for heavy snow with snow accumulation rates above 1 to 2 inches per hour within the heavier snow bands," the National Weather Service said in its advisory.

The area with the best chance of receiving heavy snow will be from the Kansas City metro area to Kirksville.

"Areas along this line and 30 to 50 miles north and south of that line will be at risk for seeing a period of moderate to heavy snow beginning in the late afternoon to early evening Friday and lasting through late Friday evening," the NWS said.

Freezing rain and freezing drizzle will start Friday morning and some areas could receive up to a 10th of an inch of ice during the morning hours.

The winter storm watch begins at noon Friday and lasts until 9 a.m. Saturday.

After the freezing rain in the morning, rain will arrive midday with the snow arriving between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday. The heaviest snow will end by midnight Friday.

Snow totals could range from 3 to 6 inches with some areas possibly seeing more than 6 inches.

"Icy surfaces including roadways will become very slick," the NWS says. "Once the snow begins, expect visibility to be very low during the periods of heaviest snow. Roads could also become packed with snow very quickly as snow rates could be rather high."

KCTV5 Chief Meteorologist Chris Suchan said some areas in the watch will see 1 to 2 inches of snow.

"A narrow band will likely set up inside it around 30 to 40 miles wide with a zone of 3 to 6 inches of snow possible," he said.

Suchan will have the latest on KCTV5 News at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sign up to get a text alert from KCTV5 if your child's school is closed due to weather. Click here.
