JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A Missouri lawmaker has introduced a bill to allow teachers to carry pepper spray in school.

State Sen. Jason Holsman's bill would allow schools to designate teachers or administrators as school protection officers and allow them to carry the spray.

The bill says that it would also require the Department of Public Safety's Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission to establish the standards for training school protection officers on how and when to use pepper spray.

It comes a day after the Overland Park police chief announced a plan to place guns and ammunition in five Shawnee Mission District schools.

Holsman represents part of Jackson County.
