Death of volunteer's mother pushed him to volunteer for Project Warmth

Posted: Updated:

Donating a coat that you don't wear anymore or maybe a child has outgrown is a relatively simple act, but it can make a big difference.

After his mother died of hypothermia in Lawrence, KS, Mike Lockhart decided something as simple as donating a coat could save a life.

"I lost my mother about three years ago to hypothermia. She was struggling with some issues and was homeless at the time. I guess she didn't make it to the homeless shelter and was walking in Lawrence and found a vehicle, crawled inside and went to sleep and never woke up," said volunteer Mike Lockhart.

Lockhart's mother Angela struggled with depression and alcohol.

"About the past five years, prior to her death, she lost connection with family, me, I didn't hear from her much, I know she was in and out of shelters," he said.

He hopes one of the coats donated this year finds its way to someone like his mother.

"That night, the reason she didn't make it to the shelter, I don't know, but she didn't. These coats would have helped her out," Lockhart said.

This is Lockhart's second year volunteering for Project Warmth. He's just one of the volunteers making sure the coats get to someone who needs them.

"You know everyone who is going to come here and ask for a coat, they're going to use it," he said.

Lockhart says he plans to help with Project Warmth every year to honor his mother.

"I guarantee some of these coats could save a life on these cold nights," he said.

Hopefully you can Take 5 to Care and support Project Warmth. KCTV5 will be collecting coats in our parking lot, located at 4500 Shawnee Mission Parkway, all day on Thursday.

If you have a warm coat to donate, KCTV5 can make sure it gets to someone who needs it. Take 5 to Care's Project Warmth is asking people to donate new and gently used coats. People can also join in a raffle to win prizes. Click here for more information.
