OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

One man is in custody after he stole a pickup truck and led Johnson County authorities on a short pursuit early Tuesday morning.

It all started about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when a homeowner interrupted someone attempting to steal their vehicle while it was warming up in their driveway in the 600 block of East Northview Avenue in Olathe.

Moments later, an Olathe police officer spotted the stolen vehicle but didn't pursue it.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper spotted the pickup a short time later heading north on Interstate 35 north of Santa Fe. The trooper gave chase.

The chase came to an end when the pickup ran a traffic light and smashed into a silver SUV near the intersection of College Boulevard and Pflumm Road in Overland Park.

The person in the SUV was not injured.

The suspect jumped out of the pickup and ran, but was caught a short distance away in a wooded area.

As a precaution, Saint Thomas Aquinas High School was placed on lockdown for a short time.
