A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a man he found walking in the middle of the road who claimed he was carrying drugs and a gun.

Officials said Saturday about 3 a.m. the trooper stopped a man who was walking in the middle of Nolan Road at Interstate 70. The man was carrying a bag.

When the trooper asked the man what was in the bag, authorities said he replied, saying he had drugs and a 9 mm handgun.

Officials said the man then reached into his waistband as if he was attempting to retrieve a weapon and the trooper shot at him. The Missouri Highway Patrol said the trooper feared for his own life.

The man was identified as 33-year-old Scott M. Williford of Kansas City, MO. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the incident revealed that Williford had just left a nearby QuikTrip gas station and, while in the store, had told the clerk that he was going to rob it. He didn't and instead left and began walking down the middle of the street.
