Witnesses may prove key to finding driver who fatally hit bicyclist

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A bicyclist was hit and found dead days later, and the hunt is on now to find the hit-and-run driver.

Santiago Zamora had visited a friend the morning of Nov. 29. He then pedaled away on his red bicycle en route to pick up his check.

He never made it there.

Instead, someone hit Zamora and then fled the scene. Zamora was thrown off to the side of the road and would not be found until Dec. 3.

Authorities haven't said whether Zamora, 40, was immediately killed or died sometime later from his injuries.

Zamora's red bike was taken from the scene of the crash in the 1800 block of Bayard Street near 18th Street Expressway. Investigators don't know whether the hit-and-run driver took the bike or a thief.

In hopes of gaining clues to find the motorist, officers were at the scene on Friday passing out information and hoping to jog memories. They were at the scene exactly a week after it occurred.

Officers say their efforts have paid off because instead of an hour window they believe the crash occurred between 6 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. That will allow detectives now to search surveillance video and cameras along the road to see if they can find the responsible driver.

Members of Zamora's family also joined the search for answers on Friday. They said they hope someone will provide the answers they need.

"We are trying to find out if anybody has seen anything," Rosa Sanchez said. "We would like to get information to get closure for our family. He was very loved by many of us."
