Authorities release identity of man killed in early-morning collision with train

Posted: Updated:
LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Traffic is moving again around an accident involving a train and a pickup Friday morning in Longview. Police said the incident happened around 2:25 a.m. in the 4000 block of Estes Parkway between Huntsman Way and Kodak Boulevard.

Investigators had set up a crime scene around the accident, involving a railroad tanker car and a white GMC Sierra pickup, which have both been cleared from the crossing.

Longview police say that 29-year-old Andrew Gooden, of Hempstead, was traveling south when he failed to stop and struck the train.. Gooden was the only occupant of the truck, which struck the tanker near the end of the train, according to firefighters at the scene. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Longview Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, two wrecker services, and Union Pacific Railroad workers responded to the scene.

"On arrival fire crews found a white GMC truck under a rail car. Fire crews did have to use extrication tools to gain access to the victim. The victim was dead on the scene this morning," said Johnny Zachary with the Longview Fire Department.

The truck ran into a tanker car, but there was no leak.

"As a result of the accident the tank car did not sustain any damage that rendered it unsafe. So evacuation was not necessary to the public," Zackary added. "Due to the accident the road was closed approximately four hours this morning."

The train had nearly cleared the intersection when the impact happened.

The railroad is inspecting the tracks for damage to make sure the tracks are still safe.

Union Pacific Railroad spokesperson Raquel Espinoza said the accident remains under investigation. "The red flashing lights were blinking when the driver drove into the side of the train." Authorities say alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
