It is like the Super Bowl for soccer fanatics, and Sporting Kansas City is vying for the trophy. The MLS Cup Final kicks off Saturday.
Sporting advanced to its first MLS Cup Final since 2004 with their recent 2-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo.
The man behind the team is head coach Peter Vermes.
"I'm just very excited for them, because I know how hard those guys work, and they deserve where they are right now. They deserve to be in this position," he said.
Vermes knows the feeling of hard work paying off. As a player, he helped the then-Wizards win the 2000 MLS Cup.
Now, he has the chance to do it again as manager.
"What you don't have to be nervous about is winning or losing. Because if you're prepared, you're going to feel good and confident about what you're going to do, and I feel that our team is and we'll go out there with that type of performance on Saturday," Vermes said.
A win would mean the city's first championship won at home since the Kansas City Royals claimed the 1985 World Series.
Doing that would be a personal and professional moment of pride for Vermes. But he gives his players all the credit.
"The great thing is what I do understand having done it as a player, players win championships. It is not about the coach. It is not about the staff. It is about the players. They're the ones that get it done so. It's an exciting time for them. As I tell them all the time, it is an opportunity, and you don't want that opportunity to pass you by," Vermes said.
Sporting plays Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS.
Although the game is sold out, you can catch the game on ESPN at 4 p.m.
Sporting is playing for the MLS Cup trophy. Jewelry maker Tiffany and Co. designed and crafted the 25-pound, sterling silver work of art. It is worth a whopping $100,000. But if you ask the players, it is priceless.
