Two Liberty parents are angry as they wonder how their 7-year-old daughter managed to walk out of school unnoticed and walk home by herself Monday.
"Crossing the train tracks was fun," Emily Box said.
It certainly wasn't fun for Emily's parents.
"On her walk home, she had to walk past a sex offender's house, over train tracks, past a creek and all with no sidewalks," said Kristi Box, Emily's mother.
It all started when Emily misunderstood instructions about going home sick. She walked past the main office at Ridgeview Elementary and right out the front door. That's when she began a one-mile trek that Emily calls an adventure, but her parents call a nightmare.
Emily's dad found her on her front porch an hour after the original call to come get her.
"I was just playing soccer up and down the hill," Emily told KCTV5 News.
The confusion began after Emily went to see the nurse at Ridgeview. The school called her dad to come get her, but Emily misunderstood.
"They said that they told her to get her backpack so she could be sent home sick and then she vanished," Box said.
The school went on lock down and started a search.
The search ended when footage from outside cameras showed Emily walking out the school doors and down the street.
The school district provided this statement:
"Liberty Public Schools works to ensure that our students are safe while at school. We are currently reviewing today's incident to make certain appropriate procedures are in place to protect our students."
Emily's mother says the district has mentioned possible changes, which she says is a start, but not enough to put her at ease.
"Honestly I don't know if there's anything they can do. Because I drop her off every day thinking OK, she's safe, she's at school, I don't have nothing to worry about. Then this. And, all they tell me on the phone is, 'Well, we're brainstorming. We're thinking of what we can do,'" Box said.
She said her issue isn't with the Liberty School District, but with the setup at Ridgeview Elementary. She says she's hoping to move Emily to another Liberty school closer to their home.
