Police are looking for serial carjackers in Overland Park

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

It appears Overland Park police are dealing with a gang of serial carjackers.

The most recent incident in a string of carjackings in the city occurred Thanksgiving afternoon.

"I hope it's just a coincidence," said Officer Gary Mason.

"It's concerning" is what Officer Tim O'Donnell said in October after a third armed carjacking in Overland Park in four months in a neighborhood near 95th and Switzer.

Now, after a fourth carjacking, police tell KCTV5 News it's not a coincidence, and the carjackings are likely being perpetrated by the same suspects.

"It's not very common in O.P., but it's not very common anywhere," said Mason.

The most recent carjacking went down just like the others, in the parking lot of an apartment complex with plenty of people around. It was Thanksgiving afternoon, near 85th and Farley. when the victim told police four men approached him as he got out of his truck. They pointed a gun at him, took his keys, and stole his truck.

"Our main message is for people to be aware of what's going on," said Mason.

All four carjackings have occurred in the north end of the city. The first was July 7 at 78th and England. The next occurred on Sept. 22nd near 78th and Grant. Then, on October 5th, an incident at 96th and Perry Lane occurred. Finally, the most recent carjacking was reported last week.

Police said three of the four victims are Hispanic men who speak very little English. Police cannot say if the carjackers are targeting non-English speakers of if the victims were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Either way, police are hoping for a break through some information.

"Possibly there might be a good witness. There are certainly people out there who know what happened, and we're asking for their help," Mason said.

Police have found the four stolen vehicles. They were all abandoned in Kansas City, KS.

One arrest has been made in a previous case.
