Woman robbed at gunpoint outside Oak Park Mall

Posted: Updated:

A gunman robbed a woman as she was leaving Oak Park Mall late Thursday night.

The man came up behind her as she was leaving the mall about 9:30 p.m.

"He displayed some type of a black handgun, and ordered her to turn over her purse and her cell phone," said Sgt. Matt Bregel of the Overland Park Police Department.

The woman complied, and police said the robber ran off with another man. The woman was shaken up but OK.

The two men fled in a black GMC Yukon, Bregel said.

The crime was caught on surveillance tape. Police did not release a detailed suspect description.

Overland Park Police said the incident is a reminder that criminals see distracted shoppers as an opportunity. But, police said shoppers should take steps to prevent becoming a victim.

"Pay attention to your surroundings, and park where there's good lighting available." Bregel told KCTV5 News. "Don't leave things of value in your car, and put packages in your trunk."

Inside the mall, some shoppers we talked with came up with their own tips.

"We're very conscious about our surroundings, and looking around the car before you get into the car," said Marta Silver.

"I just stay with a group of people, so then you have a lot more people with you. So if anything happens then they can come and help you," added shopper Reshen Fadul.

Overland Park Police are doing their part as well, running extra patrols around the malls during the holiday season, watching out for you while you watch out for that perfect gift.
