Trouble arises over Sporting KC tickets for MLS Cup

Posted: Updated:

Next weekend's MLS Cup championship game at Sporting Park is the hottest ticket in Kansas City right now.

But some Real Salt Lake fans were trying to get a leg-up on pre-ticket sales and it's got some Sporting fans steamed.

"Any fan base is going to be excited when they make it into the MLS cup," Amanda Graor said.

Graor has been a Sporting KC season ticket holder for seven years which is why she was troubled to hear that some Real Salt Lake fans we're trying to get their hands on some tickets meant for Sporting fans.

"Most people had already secured their own seats, but the bigger disappointment was if they wanted to bring a friend or a family member," Graor said.

Sporting season ticket holders were given a special code by Ticketmaster so they could go online and buy tickets. The only problem was that somehow Real Salt Lake fans got their hands on the code and started buying them online before the code got to most Sporting fans.

"Once it went viral you can imagine what happened. The majority of their fans bought upward of 1,000 tickets. We shut it down as soon as we found out about it," said Jake Reid, the chief revenue officer for Sporting.

In all about 200 Sporting season ticket holders were affected by the stunt. Ticket managers have been working the phones to make sure the ones planning on going to the game got their tickets.

"Once we figured it out, we worked with Ticketmaster and figured out what had happened and closed it down and refunded the tickets. Obviously for us it's intended for our season ticket members," Reid said.

Real Salt Lake fans are allowed 1,000 tickets to the match, but they have to get them through their club.

Sporting KC players say it shows just how sought after the MLS Cup tickets are.

"They want to support their team and get to the game, but we have a smart league and they didn't let it happen," said forward Dom Dwyer.

"That's what we worked all season for, to get this home game in front of our fans," said defender Matt Besler.

Manager Peter Vermes knows the game is a reward to fans and the team.

"The way I look at it is a simple one, we're rewarded for having the most points and it's at our home park," Vermes said. "Obviously that's the way it should be and that's the way it's going to be."

The incident left many asking if there was a better way, is there a better way to manage tickets through a Ticketmaster code.

"We've had quite a few conversations this morning...yeah...," Reid said.

Around 5,000 tickets were allocated to Sporting season ticket holders as a perk for hosting the Cup Championship. Whatever tickets are left, plus standing room only tickets will be available on Monday.
