Police are searching for a man who drove recklessly across the Kansas City area and bailed from the vehicle in Leawood.
Kansas City police tried to arrest the man on an outstanding felony warrant. Police said he had a history of fleeing.
He then drove recklessly across highways in Jackson and Johnson counties on both sides of the state line while fleeing police. Because of safety concerns, officers backed off. Chopper5 was overhead and relayed information to officers that allowed them to keep track of the driver.
Chopper5 was over the scene as the white SUV hit at least one vehicle. The driver headed the wrong way at times.
Hanna Hentzen was the innocent driver hit by the fleeing man. She said she was turning onto Lee Boulevard when in a matter of seconds she was hit. She said she didn't see him coming until it was too late.
"I'm just very thankful ... that I'm OK and that everybody else is OK," she said. "That's the only thing that really matters to me.'
She said after the man struck her vehicle that she pulled to the side of the and an officer was there to help out very quickly. She then went home and watched the rest of the police activity on KCTV5.com.
She described herself as shaken up and flustered, but OK. That is also how Tobi Freeman feels.
Freeman was driving west on Interstate 435 from Missouri into Kansas when the man nearly hit her. She said she had just picked up her 2-year-old daughter from the daycare.
"I was in the middle lane and next thing I knew he was less than a foot from my bumper and passed me. He cut me off," she said.
She said she slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting him. She estimated that he was driving at least 80 mph.
"I have never had someone blow by me and cut me off like that before. It scared the crap out of me especially with my daughter in the car," Freeman said.
She said she was shaking and her daughter began to cry.
About 4:50 p.m., the driver bailed out of the SUV at 99th and Jarboe streets in Kansas City. The man was last seen running on foot near 109th Street and State Line Road in Leawood. The man was seen running through streets in Leawood.
