Former corrections officer arrested on extortion charges

Posted: Updated:

A 22-year-old former corrections officer and an inmate are facing felony extortion charges.

The Arizona Department of Corrections said former officer Jordan Martie of Winslow was working at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Winslow when he and the inmate developed a scheme where the inmate threatened a fellow inmate and demanded $900 in protection money.

Martie allegedly offered his personal protection to the victim in exchange for the $900 to be paid by the victim's family.

Martie reportedly contacted a member of the victim's family and arranged for them to give him the money.

The family members made a payment and then contacted the Department's Criminal Investigations Unit which launched an investigation.

Martie resigned.

He had been with the department since Feb. 11, 2013.
