Mohegan Sun looks for non-gaming development in Palmer

PALMER, MA (WSHM) -

Mohegan Sun announced it'll explore non-gaming projects at the site it has leased in Palmer.

Suffolk Downs race track near Boston says it has been in contact with Mohegan as a possible developer to build a casino on its property.

Mohegan says they still want to develop the 152 acres of land they've leased off Exit 8 on the Mass Pike.

Palmer residents voted down Mohegan's $1 billion casino proposal for that property.

Following Mohegan's announcement Friday Palmer town councilor and long-time advocate of the casino proposal Paul Burns spoke out.

"Mohegan can claim they will 'explore' non-casino development on this site, the reality is they are simply exploring ways to ensure there is no real Western MA competition to their home casino. Good neighbors since 1640? Absolutely not! After all good neighbors don't work to impoverish their neighborhood. Good neighbors aren't vindictive. Good neighbors care about more than their own bottom line," Burns said in a statement sent to CBS 3.
