KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A teen was found dead inside a car abandoned in a field in Independence, and police believe she was fatally shot at a Kansas City motel.

Police have identified the victim as 19-year-old Michelle L. Russell.  Her death is suspicious, police say, but detectives are waiting for autopsy results to determine cause of death.

Police say they are wanting to question a man in connection with the teen's death.

About 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police were called to a Motel 6 at 8230 NW Prairie View Rd. Police saw a trail of blood outside the motel near the parking lot, but were unable to find a victim.

Police put out an alert for a 1998 Dodge Neon with a Missouri license plate that a man and woman were seen leaving in.

About 4:30 a.m. Friday, police found the Neon in a field off R.D. Mize Road and Jackson Drive. This is just east of Centerpoint Hospital in Independence.

The vehicle belongs to a friend of Russell. Police interviewed that woman and she was released.

Police have not released any details on the person of interest who they are seeking.
