Taylor Swift listed as next-of-kin by pilot killed in Nashville crash
Michael Callan was killed in a crash Oct. 29 at Nashville International Airport.
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A lot of questions surround the deadly crash at Nashville International Airport last month, but now there's a new one: why was country star Taylor Swift listed as the pilot's next-of-kin?
A single-engine Cessna crashed in a dense fog the morning of Oct. 29, killing the Canadian pilot, Michael Callan.
No one knew Callan was coming to Nashville, and the pilot did not file a flight plan that included the airport.
After the plane crashed, the burned wreckage sat undiscovered for several hours.
Now Metro police have confirmed in the days after the crash a Federal Aviation Administration investigator told a Metro detective the pilot listed Taylor Swift as his next of kin.
Police notified her, but she and her team denied knowing Callan.
Swift's publicist, Paula Erickson, told The Tennessean:
"The first we heard of this was when the appropriate authorities contacted Taylor's management about the crash. Taylor does not know this person."
Callan rented the plane from the Windsor Flying Club.
When reached by phone, the club's president told Channel 4 News on Thursday, "I know nothing of that silly story."
He denied Swift's name appeared on any paperwork at the club and said Callan listed his sisters as next-of-kin.
He declined an interview out of respect for Callan's family but several weeks ago defended his friend at the center of a still growing mystery.
"Our focus at this point, of course, is the fact that we've lost one of our fellow fliers. And we're feeling pretty bad about that," said David Gillies, with the Windsor Flying Club. "He has sufficient experience to go overnight in the past. So we had no concerns in that respect."
The National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate.
Callan reportedly circled the airport for quite a while before the crash. The reason why also remains part of the mystery.
