Peoria has found a unique and respectful solution for disposing of worn out American flags.

The city calls on residents to drop off their old flags at any Peoria fire station from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

A new program led by retired Peoria fire Capt. John Davirro will collect the flags from the fire stations and deliver them to Heritage Funeral Home.

The old flags will then be used to cover the caskets of veterans who are being cremated, making sure both the veteran and the flag are properly honored, the city said.

Drop-off boxes will be located just inside the front lobby doors of the stations.

Residents wishing to also give to troops currently serving overseas can also drop-off donations at any Peoria firehouse for "Christmas for the Troops."

The collection is sponsored by the Peoria Sunset Lions Club Foundation. Coordinators are asking for donations of toiletries for men and women to be placed in care packages for troops serving in Afghanistan.
