SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
As an argument about a voice message from a Spartanburg man's mother escalated Sunday, deputies said the man hit his girlfriend in the head with an ax.
Spartanburg County deputies said they were initially called to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a woman was found lying unconscious in the parking lot outside of the emergency room.
Deputies said they later learned the woman drove herself to the hospital after getting in a fight with William Hollis, 33.
Deputies said the victim was at home with Hollis when they started arguing about a voicemail left by his mother. According to the deputy's report, Hollis told the victim to stop yelling, then grabbed her by her shirt collar, threw and dragged her about the bedroom.
Then Hollis grabbed a double-sided ax that was hanging on their bedroom wall, missing the first time he swung at her but hitting her in the back of the head the second time, deputies said.
The victim ran to the bathroom to stop the bleeding and Hollis went to check on her before his mother arrived, deputies said. That's when Hollis got the ax and other items and left with his mom, deputies said.
The report said the victim drove off, dropping her children at a relative's home before heading to the hospital, deputies said. When they searched their home, deputies said they did not find the ax or any signs of blood.
Hollis was arrested on an unrelated magistrate charge and also charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
