Collins transition team represents broad cross-section of citizenry

Posted: Updated:

Toledo Mayor-elect, D. Michael Collins, rolled out his transition team on Saturday as he prepares to take office in January.

The team held its first meeting to discuss what direction the city should take during the Collins administration.

The approximately 40 members of the team discussed what's expected of them, reviewed Collins' campaign platform and were handed committee assignments.

There are some familiar faces on the team, including former Toledo mayors Jack Ford and Carty Finkbeiner.

But there are also labor leaders, current and former city council members, clergy and Toledo citizens.

Bob Reinbolt, Mr. Finkbeiner's former chief of staff, is the team director.

"We have a variety of people. Backgrounds that we want. The key is the city is represented," said Mr. Reinbolt.

Mr. Collins told the team they're a blend of energy and experience.

He adds that everyone represents a piece of a cloth on a quilt whose main job will be to evaluate priorities in the city's core services.

"To define where our weaknesses are but also to define our strengths and make suggestions as to how we can improve our governance," said Mr. Collins.

One member of the team is outgoing Toledo city councilman George Sarantou.

He plans to advise the team on city finances, which remain tight as Toledo continues to recover from the recession.

"I think I will bring a perspective of caution. But we need to make changes. We need to be focused on getting more jobs in this community," said Mr. Sarantou.

Mr. Collins says his campaign platform will not change but the transition team will play an advisory role on who makes up his cabinet.
