Gilbert firefighters respond to bio diesel fire

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters and hazmat crews are cleaning up following a fire at a bio diesel plant in Gilbert.

Gilbert Fire Department spokesman Brian Ruffentine said Saturday morning around 8 a.m. a fork lift operator punctured a 330 gallon barrel of methyl alcohol at the REV Bio diesel plant located in the 1900 block of Commerce Avenue.

The volatile mixture of the methyl alcohol and nearby sulfuric acid ignited a fire.

Ruffentine said the building's sprinkler system put out the flames, and crews were called in to help clean up the chemical mess.

Authorities say the public was not in any danger and no injuries were reported.
