State trooper injured in Sylvania traffic crash

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A state trooper from the Toledo Patrol Post was injured in a crash in Sylvania early Saturday morning.

Troopers say the crash occurred around midnight on northbound US 23, just south of the Monroe Street exit.

Trooper Jacquelyn Layson, 41, was sitting in her patrol car in the right lane with emergency lights on, providing traffic control for road construction, according to officials. A pick up truck pulling a homemade flatbed, driven by 21-year-old Jacob Armentrout, of Temperance, Michigan, slammed into Layson's patrol car.

Troopers believe Armentrout was trying to avoid striking other cars stopped in traffic, so he swerved to the right, hitting the patrol car.

Layson was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Armentrout was not injured. He was cited for failing to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

Officials say alcohol and drugs did not contribute to the crash, which remains under investigation.
