Officials: Ball State campus clear, OK to resume normal activities

Police were investigating reports of a gunman on the campus of Ball State University on Friday evening.

Officials originally tweeted (@Ballstate_Alert), "An individual in the Rec Center shouted there was a gun. UPD is securing and assessing situation in HP, Lewellen, Rec Center and the Arena."

Officials were stressing that it was not an active shooter situation. They also said there were no hostages.

Officials are still unclear if there was ever a gunman on campus.

It's was reported that an explosion was heard outside one of the perimeters. Authorities confirmed it was a service weapon that was accidentally discharged. No one was injured.

Officials gave the OK to resume normal activities after nearly 3 hours of investigating.

Jim Gaffigan was on campus Friday to perform at Emens Auditorium.
