BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

One of Beaufort City's oldest churches was honored today by receiving an historical marker from the state.

St. Peter's Catholic Church was built in the early 1800's by Beaufort County native Patrick O'Connor.

After years of neglect, the church has been restored and still stand in its original locationat 710 Carteret Street.

O'Connor's great-granddaughter-in-law, Mary Pugh was thrilled that the church is still standing.

"I really think the people who've done this should be recognized for doing something like this .It's really quite wonderful because they've saved something that could have fallen into disrepair."

This ceremony also marks the church's 167th anniversary.
