Holyoke firefighters were honored Thursday night at fire headquarters for outstanding work in their community.
Seven of them were honored for helping after the tornado hit West Springfield.
Recipients of the awards as well as family members of those killed in the line of duty say it's an honor to be recognized.
The Arthur J. Petit Jr. Award was given to Capt. James Byrnes for honorable service and exhibiting a positive image for the department.
The award is named after Petit, who was killed in 1996 in the line of duty.
"My father would stop all the time, even if he wasn't working, and that's what they want to do is help people," said Petit's daughter, Linda Petit-Vanasse.
Another prestigious award given Thursday night was the Lt. Daniel Boyle Award. Retired firefighter John Golden was honored with the award for "exemplifying the qualities of Lt. Boyle ... courage in the face of adversity, dignity despite despair and a contagious positive spirit." He died in 2008 after battling cancer.
"We have always been very privileged and understand what this firefighting family means and they have been just so good to dad through all of this and to all of us as well," said Golden's daughter, Jill Gagne.
