PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Runners in the 5K at Arizona AIA Cross Country State Championships last weekend had an unexpected four-legged competitor.

A coyote jumped into the race at the 1.5-mile mark and ran alongside the race's leader for about 50 meters and then returned to brush near the course, according to Runner's World.

The race leader didn't realize the coyote was right next to him and went on to win the race.
