EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Two suspects are in custody Thursday night after a brief manhunt in Effingham County.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office has 22-year-old Ashton Wallace and a 17-year-old in custody after they abandoned their vehicle and fled into the woods.

Wallace is on the Effingham County Most Wanted List in connection with the Dollar General armed robbery that took place on Highway 30 in early November.

"He saw a state trooper down McCall road with his blue lights on, and he probably thought it was something involving him, which it wasn't. And him and the 17-year-old just ditched the car and took off into the woods," said Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor.

"ECSO currently has warrants for Wallace for armed robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon," Ehsanipoor said.

Wallace is a repeat offendor. He was arrested in 2010 after a deputy saw him and another man kicking a puppy back and forth between them.

"Ashton Wallace is a dangerous person. He's a convicted felon, and there's no place in society for someone like that."

Deputies had a warrant to arrest Wallace for the Dollar General robbery but also consider him a suspect in other crimes, including a two-month string of convenience and dollar store robberies.

The 17-year-old Wallace was with was arrested too, but his name isn't being released yet.

"We're not sure if the 17-year-old is involved in any of the robberies or not," said Ehsanipoor.

The vehicle that Wallace fled from was the same vehicle that was stolen Wednesday night in a carjacking at Jonesville Baptist Church in Savannah.

Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues. Both suspects are currently being held in the Effingham County Jail.
