Holiday greeting cards offer hope for homeless children

Posted: Updated:

It is going to be a tough holiday season for some of the youngest Americans.

The U.S. Department of Education reports the number of homeless school-aged children has increased 10 percent since last year.

Now, there is way to help some of those children in the metro through holiday greeting cards.

The cards feature a photograph taken by a child from Sheffield Place, expressing heartfelt hopes and dreams. It's proving that a simple photograph can change lives.

Josie Kilgore was given the chance to change focus and picture her future. She and other homeless children at Sheffield Place were forced to look at life differently.

Celebrity photographer Linda Solomon travels the country showing children how to capture their hopes and dreams through a camera lens.

"It has given hope, which is really important here, because it's really easy to lose hope and not even think about what I could do," said Kelly Welch, executive director at Sheffield Place.

Their photos were turned into holiday cards with simple wishes for things most children would take for granted, like clothes that fit, food and a home.

For Josie, she imagines going to college.

"It is what I look forward to doing," she said.

And she will hold on to her dream and let nothing stand in the way.

"If I'm having a bad day, then I know I have this dream. So I don't let bullying or whatever get in my way, because I still have a dream, and I can't let that dream down," she said.

The holiday greeting cards are on sale now. You can order them through the Sheffield Place.  All the money from sales will go toward keeping the lights on in the place of hope.
