NEW RIVER, AZ (CBS5) -
Three hand grenades were discovered by bomb technicians conducting a final search of a New River property where a man was severely injured by an explosive device on Nov. 4.
Steven Lane, 49, lost his left foot and injured his face and right eye in the blast, according to Chelsie Garner, who heard the explosion along with her boyfriend, Jordan Perrin.
A Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman said they're still trying to determine whether the pair had a legal right to be on the property.
The recently-found grenades appeared to be weathered and likely were on the property for a long time, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said. Each was disposed of by a bomb technician.
The address where last week's explosion occurred was once the home of Charles Byers, a former explosives maker, who in 1997 was the subject of a criminal investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Garner and Perrin said they were in the process of moving out but authorities stated the house had no running water or lights and that the home was vacant for about six months.
Bomb detectives said the explosive went off on a berm behind the home and that the initial call to 911 referenced a refrigerator hurting someone, but once on scene the reality was a different one.
