SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A teen accused of raping a girl with another teenager at Sylvania's Olander Park back in September has taken a plea deal.
The 14-year-old student has agreed to testify against the 17-year-old suspect in the case. In exchange, the boy will not have to register as a sex offender, and will be referred to a youth treatment center for six months, followed by serving probation.
According to the prosecutor, the 14-year-old defendant agreed to the following: The three boys were at the park when the younger teen and 15-year-old girl went into a bathroom. Sexual contact occurred between the two in that bathroom. The prosecutor says, and the younger defendant agreed, that at that point, the older teen entered the bathroom and coerced the younger boy into raping the victim.
The prosecutor says the victim and her family are happy with the deal.
"We are trying to keep a victim for having to testify and having to relive a really awful time, probably the worst thing that has ever happened to this girl in her life. So if we can keep her from testifying and get done the things that we think are appropriate, that's what we will do. Yes, we were all on board with this," said Lucas County Juvenile Prosecutor Lori Olender.
The 17-year-old teen charged in this case will go to trial Nov. 20.
