PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Four people were displaced after a fire damaged four apartments in Phoenix early Wednesday morning.

The fire appeared to have started in a vacant unit of the single-story complex near 27th Street and Greenway Parkway about 5:45 a.m., said Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra.

Two of the four units had flames shooting from windows and doors when firefighters arrived, and it took about 40 firefighters to extinguish the flames.

Smoke filled the common attic at the complex, Saavedra said, prompting the call to escalate to a first alarm fire.

The Phoenix Fire Crisis Response Team was assisting the displaced residents. Only two of the apartments were occupied, Saavedra said.

No injuries were reported, and firefighters were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
