The owners of about a dozen goats at a popular field in southeast Portland are trying to figure out who would steal one of them, stain its horns and then leave it tied up to a chain-link fence with a bungee cord.
Someone took Bambi, a Nigerian Dwarf goat, out of the field near Southeast Belmont Street and Southeast 10th Avenue sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the current owners told FOX 12.
A passer-by called Mike Redmond, the former owner of the goats, early Sunday afternoon after spotting Bambi tied up to the field's front gate.
The field has become a popular attraction since the goats first appeared several years ago.
"We guessed that somebody had taken her," Redmond said.
Bambi's horns had obviously been stained or painted, he said.
"They're definitely different than everybody else's horns," said Natalie Denny, who came to visit the goats on Monday evening with her two sons and a friend.
The gate around the field had been locked, so the current owners of the goats think someone had to break in or jump over the chain-link fence to get Bambi.
"We don't know if it was Saturday night or maybe it was Sunday morning or if she was only gone for an hour or what," said Christopher "Bix" Frankonis, who's with the group Urban Goats PDX.
The important thing is Bambi is OK, her owners said. But they hope whoever took her feels ashamed for what they did.
"The safest and healthiest place for them is inside this field, where we have them," Frankonis said. "Where we can all keep an eye on them, and people are monitoring them all the time. And the police drive by to keep an eye on them and help us out."
The current owners of the goats want to emphasize that there is no trespassing allowed on the property.
They have filed a police report about what happened to Bambi, they said. Call Portland police if you have any information about the case.
