Arizona submits application for FAA drone testing

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Today, cameras are everywhere but quite often they're mounted. However, by 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration hopes to regulate drone usage throughout the United States.

"The FAA would like to make it possible for unmanned aerial systems to operate within civilian airspace by 2015," said James Arrowood, an attorney with the Scottsdale-based Frutkin Law Firm.

Those drones could be used in a variety of ways, from news coverage to law enforcement surveillance.

"There are clearly concerns. What about noise? What about privacy?" asked Arrowood.

"Would you like Joe Arpaio to look into your home at night? Creeping over your fence, I mean, that's what you're looking at with some of these privacy issues," he continued.

Right now, the FAA is taking applications from states that want to be test areas for integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems or UAS into the nation's airspace. Arizona is one of 25 states that submitted an application.

"I'm expecting (UAS usage) to go nuts," said Rick Powers, a salesman at Hobby Bench.

That's the view of many hobbyists, who said UAS regulation will not only mean a boom for business but an entirely new crop of pilots.

"I'm afraid that everybody and their brother will think they're an expert helicopter and camera man and a news gatherer," said Powers.

The testing program will run through 2015. Then, we could see commercial and governmental use of drones throughout the United States.
