Bill Guinigundo, President of the Filipino American Association of Southern Ohio
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Filipinos in the tri-state have been anxiously awaiting word about the fate of loved ones in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
FOX19 spoke with Bill Guinigundo, President of the Filipino American Association of Southern Ohio. Guinigundo expressed difficulties communicating with the island nation. "The news coming out is so spotty because communications are down, cell telephone antennas are none existent and telephone. There's no power."
Much of the information about the fate of family and friends in the Philippines has come through social media and email. "For the people that have relatives in the Philippines some of them have heard from their relatives, but some of them have not so we really don't know what's going on as we speak right now."
According to Guinigundo, the typhoon reminds him of another storm. "It's twice the strength of Katrina and we saw how it devastated the city of New Orleans and we are so concerned because there's no buildings in some of the islands to lessen the strength of the storm."
The Filipino American Association is organizing a relief effort and Guinigundo says there's something everyone can do. "Prayers, a lot of prayers for our people. I think it is important that we say a prayer or two for the people that are really suffering as we speak right now."
