NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -
Bees being transported through North Las Vegas escaped Thursday afternoon, prompting officials to lock down a nearby school.
Capt. Cedric Williams, of the North Las Vegas Fire Department, said crews were called to the intersection of Kenneth Road and Orr Avenue after someone reported a beehive on a flatbed trailer near Fay Herron Elementary School.
Williams said a shelter-in-place order was issued for the school. He said several roads in the area were closed, including Pecos and Kenneth roads, Glendale Avenue and Lillis Avenue.
A resident of the area was coming home from work when he was greeted in his driveway by the swarm.
"When I drove by the truck you didn't even know there were bees there. I didn't notice until I go to the house. I'd never seen that many bees before, and they were mad," said Bob Wright.
Even with hundreds of thousand of bees escaping into the air, there was only one reported case of a person getting stung.
North Las Vegas Fire used foam retardant, normally used for fires, to smother the bees and kill may of them in the area.
A local pest control expert was called in to assist and said the driver of the trailer is likely to be at fault.
"Sounds like the semi-truck driver pulled over to take a nap and the sun was shining on the bees, and they got agitated and started flying off," said Jimmy Stephensen of JS Pest Control.
When the driver of the truck was told to leave the area the rest of the swarm quickly dissipated.
There were approximately 450 beehives on the truck, each carrying upwards of 5,000 bees.
Stephensen believes they were likely Africanized honeybees, but pose no imminent danger to the surrounding area.
North Las Vegas Police will continue the investigation to find the exact cause of the escape.
