Franklin 5th-graders learn proper care for American flag

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

Veterans Day is Monday, and some fifth-graders in Williamson County are honoring those who've served by taking on a big responsibility at school.

Franklin police helped train the fifth-grade honor guard Tuesday at Pearre Creek Elementary School on the proper way to fold the American flag and raise and lower it.

Principal Stephanie Chatham started the group a year ago.

The flag raising ceremony was part of the daily routine at her previous school, on a naval base in The Bahamas.

"I think that it builds a sense of pride in country, something bigger than we are," Chatham said. "Just thinking about how lucky we are to live here, how fortunate we are and really getting a piece of the real freedom we have that a lot of people forget about, I think."

"It feels really honoring. You do have to have responsibility for the flag and make sure it doesn't touch the ground at all," said student Sophie Hensiek.

The fifth-grade teachers choose the eight students who make up the honor guard.

Chatham says the only guidance she gives the teachers is to not choose kids who are always in the limelight but those who are always kind and serve as good role models.
