Police are investigating after two people were injured in an attempted armed robbery outside an Independence discount smoke shop.

Police said the two victims were leaving about 6:15 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of North MO 291 Highway when they were approached by a man armed with a handgun.

The suspect struck one victim with the handgun before shooting the second victim in the right calf.

Both victims sustained non-life-threatening injures and were treated at area hospitals.

The suspect was described as having a short "afro" style haircut with curls. He fled the scene in what is believed to be 90s model, maroon Ford Taurus.

Police said there was no loss reported by either victim.

If anyone has any information, they are urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 or the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7852.
