KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
As local leaders push to consolidate the three terminals to one terminal at Kansas City International Airport, a former FBI agent told KCTV5 that Friday's shooting at Los Angeles International Airport shows the value of multiple terminals.
Proponents of creating a single terminal say it would be easier and less expensive to operate. The push includes the claim that security would be easier to manage with a single terminal.
But former FBI agent Michael Tabman said KCI's multiple security checkpoints at multiple gates at multiple terminals spreads out the crowds and makes it easier for security agents to keep an eye out of passengers and others. He said it's more manageable in pieces.
"If you look at KCI, those terminals are very lightly traveled. We don't normally have big lines or big crowds. From a security perspective, it's easier to monitor," Tabman said.
Smaller crowds at KCI also mean less chance of injuries during an exchange of gunfire between gunmen and law enforcement officers, Tabman said.
"If there's a shooting, we will have less chaos. So from my perspective on the outside looking in, I think it would be better to keep it the way it is," Tabman said.
LAX has multiple terminals.
The airport shooting on the West Coast did prompt extra security precautions at KCI Friday afternoon. Passengers were urged to be aware of their surroundings and report anything suspicious to the authorities.
The shooting that grounded planes for hours coming in and out of LAX caused few delays at KCI. A Southwest Airlines flight from LA was canceled.
Planes that had left the L.A. area before the shooting carried passengers that had no knowledge until they landed and got texts, phone calls and emails from worried loved ones.
"I landed and started getting texts from my kids saying, 'Are you OK?' They didn't say anything in the terminal. They didn't say anything on the plane," passenger Scott Carlson said.
