PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A measure to ban workplace discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation came right to the doorsteps of Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake's Phoenix offices on Thursday.

Volunteers with the Americans for Workplace Opportunity campaign delivered more than 6,500 personalized postcards to the lawmakers in support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

"Our grassroots work in Arizona the past few months has produced thousands of constituent contacts in support of ENDA," said Matt McTighe, Americans for Workplace Opportunity campaign manager.

Currently, in the majority of states, there is no law prohibiting an employer from firing or refusing to hire someone simply because he or she is gay or transgender.

The Americans for Workplace Opportunity campaign has been on the ground in Arizona for months building grassroots support for ENDA.

In addition to the postcards, Arizonans made hundreds of phone calls to the senators' offices to express their support.

Sen. Harry Reid said he plans to bring the bill to the Senate floor in the coming weeks.
