Two Vancouver teens are facing charges after police say they staged an ax attack in a gas station parking lot.

Officers responded Wednesday night to a report of a young man dressed in a motorcycle helmet and leather jacket attacking someone with an ax.

John Farness said he had just pulled into the Shell station on Fourth Plain and Andresen with his wife to help their son fix a flat tire.

He said a man who appeared to be attacking someone with an ax turned his attention toward the family. Even on the eve of Halloween, there was little reason to think this wasn't 100 percent real.

"Just this guy, his stance, it was very scary," Farness said.

Farness said he was crouched down near the car and the suspect appeared to be going toward his wife, who started screaming, with his stepson right there as well.

"It could've very easily ended differently for these guys had either myself or him had a weapon," Farness said.

The family attempted to run away, at which point the suspects revealed that the whole thing was supposed to be a funny prank.

"He finally flipped up his mask and said, 'It's a joke,'" Farness said. "And I said, 'Well, it's not a joke. It's not funny.'"

Police were able to track down the suspects who said they were "pranking" people by pretending to attack one another with the ax and then threatening any nearby witnesses while they videotaped the whole thing, according to officers.

Police recovered the ax, which was determined to be fake but realistic looking.

Pavel Krivov and Petru Tomcac, both 18, each now face a second-degree assault charge. They were booked in the Clark County Jail and made their first appearance in court Thursday.

Police also received a report about a similar situation the night before at Sixth and Broadway.

No one was hurt in either incident.

In both cases, the suspect charged at the victims but did not make contact with them, police said.
