A high-profile, well-respected Tempe police officer has abruptly resigned and faces the possibility of criminal charges.
Tempe police have confirmed Jessica Dever-Jakusz suddenly resigned from the department amid a criminal investigation involving the crime of hindering prosecution.
Dever-Jakusz has been with the department since 2000. According to other officers and supervisors in Tempe who asked not to be identified, Dever-Jakusz was a well-liked, well-respected officer. All said that her resigning under a cloud of allegation of wrongdoing is shocking.
The criminal report associated with the allegations has been turned over to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review and possible charges.
Neither the county attorney's office or Tempe police would discuss the case.
Dever-Jakusz and a fellow officer, were recently chosen by their supervisors to take part in a Swiss television reality show. The two spent time job swapping with two Swiss officers.
Dever-Jakusz's name may sound familiar to those in the law enforcement world. She is the daughter-in-law of the late Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County. She is married to the sheriff's son, Garrett Dever who is a Chandler police officer.
A spokesman for the Chandler Police Department confirms that Garrett Dever is also under investigation within their ranks. But Garrett Dever's investigation is strictly internal and not criminal. Garrett Dever remains on the job in his full capacity.
CBS 5 News has gotten a hold of an internal memo from Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff. The entire contents are as follows:
"As Chief of Police, it is my goal to maintain an open and transparent line of communication throughout our entire organization. Sometimes – based on the nature of our crime]fighting mission and the rights of all of our employees – this is difficult to do, as confidentiality surrounding active criminal and/or administrative investigations must be adhered to. With the above in mind, it has come time for me to share as much information as I can regarding the recent resignation of Officer Jessica Dever-Jakusz.
"Over the past few days, there has been much speculation, rumor and innuendo floating around as to why Jess chose to separate her employment with the city. Additionally, we have received media inquiries to the same effect. To that end, I will remain both respectful and mindful of Jess and her family while simultaneously meeting the needs of our department and our community.
"In short, I can confirm that Jess' decision to resign was voluntarily in nature and for reasons which are personal to her and her family. Additionally, I can confirm that an active criminal investigation related to the crime of hindering prosecution was undertaken based upon evidence discovered and as such, the matter was recently forwarded to the Maricopa CountyAttorney's Office for a charging review.
"At this time, this matter remains an active and ongoing investigation. Though this matter and the details which surround it are most unfortunate, they are most certainly not representative of the entire Tempe Police Department as each of us works hard on a daily basis; committed to our oath of office and to serving our community with the utmost respect, courtesy, and professionalism.
"In closing, as time moves forward, I am confident that more information will be able to be released. Until that time, we must remain committed to our crime]fighting mission and continue to provide the high level of service our community has come to appreciate, deserve and expect."
