A Johnson County woman went to court Tuesday. She is accused of stalking a man who investigates crimes.
The Shawnee, KS, police officer said he's been targeted, harassed and put in fear for his life.
"Police officers in general, you don't expect them to be victims in these types of crimes," said District Attorney Steve Howe.
For the second time in two years a Shawnee police officer is listed as a victim to the crime of stalking. Police said in 2010 the officer met Carla Smallwood in an identity theft case where she was the victim. From there it's alleged her infatuation with the officer began.
She's accused of sending between 400 and 500 e-mails and texts to the officer. She's even accused of sending packages to his home, something Smallwood denies.
Tuesday in court she told the judge in reference to the officer "I have no idea where he lives. I don't care to know where he lives. I don't even care about the man."
"Some of these can be some of the more dangerous cases where a person gets fixated on an individual and won't leave that person alone. We take it very seriously," Howe said.
Smallwood is facing a felony charge of stalking because last year she pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of stalking in a case involving the same officer. She had to undergo a mental health evaluation and was placed on 12 months probation.
The probation would have run through Aug. 30 of this year. Almost immediately it's alleged the texts and e-mails started up again.
"Just because they do public work and service doesn't mean that the laws don't apply for them," Howe said.
Smallwood's family says she has a history of mental problems, but insists that she would never hurt anyone.
