New York State Police arrested a Danbury man who they said crossed state lines and had sexual contact with a teenager.
State police said Paul Hines, a professor at Western Connecticut State University, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child as a result of the investigation into the incident involving a 15-year-old.
New York State Police said Hines communicated with the teen over the internet, met at the teen's Somers, NY, home and engaged in sexual contact.
Western Connecticut State University released a statement on the arrest of Hines, who has been with the school since 1968.
"I know that all in the Western community received yesterday's news about Professor Paul Hines with the same surprise and shock that I did. This is a difficult day for our university. We are taking appropriate administrative measures as the criminal justice process proceeds. In the meantime, it is important that we support each other and not be distracted from the important work for which we exist - creating the future of our state, nation and world through the education of our students. I thank you in advance for maintaining that focus and for your commitment to our community," said university President James W. Schmotter.
Schmotter said there have been no previous incidents involving Hines during this time with the university.
A spokesperson for WCSU said they are still sorting out what happened. At this point, Hines has not shown up for work and that is being taken into account.
Hines remains in a Westchester County, NY, jail.
At least one of Hines' neighbors told Eyewitness News they saw police at his home this week.
"I've never had any issues, heard anything," said a neighbor, who wished not to be identified.
