(CNN) – Parts of a strict new abortion law in Texas have been declared unconstitutional.
A federal judge made the ruling Monday, one day before the law was scheduled to take effect.
The measure would have required doctors performing the procedure to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and they would have to follow strict rules for inducing medical abortions.
Planned Parenthood and abortion providers in the state challenged the law. The judge said the regulations restricted a woman's access to an abortion.
The American Civil Liberties Union praised the judge's decision.
In a statement, the ACLU said the law "would have made abortion services for one-third of women in the state virtually impossible to access."
Governor Rick Perry is vowing to challenge the judge's ruling.
