A Kansas City man who won't let Lou Gehrig's disease stop him from donating his time to charity is nominated for a national honor.
Don Post is one of four finalists in the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award, a NASCAR competition that will honor those who give back to their communities.
Lou Gehrig's disease, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), caused Post to lose the ability to move most of his fingers. The disease progressively made every day tasks more difficult, but that didn't stop a man on a mission to donate to charity.
With the use of just one finger, Post coordinates about 400 volunteers for two of Kansas City's largest charity events including the March for Babies and Bikers for Babies.
"You would never know that from his work. He keeps going. He keeps chugging along. It is what he loves to do," said Kaitlyn Kash, community director for March of Dimes.
In the 1980s, doctors diagnosed Post with ALS.
"Don always tells me volunteering is his life. When he was diagnosed, he decided that he was going to make the best of it and give all the time he had left to charity and volunteering," Kash said.
Due to his 33 years of volunteer work, dozens of organizations have recognized Post.
If he is awarded the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award, NASCAR will donate $100,000 to Kansas City's March of Dimes. That would mean the world to Post.
"It is all about the babies. He really got more involved with the March of Dimes after he met one of our ambassador children. He has known her since she was born. She was born premature," Kash said.
Post hopes to help more children by winning the online vote.
"We want to make sure this man has the most votes but to make sure he has the most votes that any NASCAR finalist has ever had," Kash said.
Click here to vote for Post. You can vote once each day until Dec. 5.
