Independence police are warning residents of a suspicious man inappropriately approaching women and who was possibly involved in a home invasion where a female was attacked in her sleep.
In a press release, they said as far as the police department is aware, all of the incidents have occurred within a small radius near 14th Street and Cunningham Avenue.
The subject description obtained is a light-skinned, black man, 20 to 25 years of age. He is described as having short hair, a cleanly shaved face and is small in stature. He is between 5'6" and 5'8" tall and weighs between 120 and 140 pounds.
One neighbor told KCTV5 her friend who lives in the area was nearly a victim of a similar crime.
"Some guy tried walking in my friend's house. She was in the bathroom, and we called the cops," Ashley Voss said. "The dogs wouldn't let the guy in. And we don't even know who he was or nothing."
Voss said police are already a constant presence in the area.
"There has been three shootings around here in the past month. The neighborhood's bad. It's gotten really bad in the last three months," she said.
But Carl Mitchell, who lives very close to where the home invasion happened, said he feels pretty safe in the apartment complex.
"It's kind of unusual because the office said this building is one of the quietest building over here," he said. "It's just so unfortunate that the lady downstairs, her door got kicked in."
As the investigation continues, the police department said they have increased patrols in the area.
They are asking anyone who sees anyone matching this description who is acting in a suspicious manner to immediately call the police department.
If anyone has any information about the incidents, they are asked to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-8177 or the Independence Missouri Police Department at 816-325-7852.
