PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An Arizona woman who rescued a hurt pit bull while she was out on a morning hike is receiving an award for her good deed.

PETA spokeswoman Allison Lakomski said Andi Davis was notified Friday morning that she is the recipient of PETA's Compassionate Action Award. The Arizona Humane Society will present the award to Davis on PETA's behalf.

Davis discovered the animal, who had been shot, while she was hiking near 20th Street and Dunlap.

It took one hour to carry the nearly dead, 47-pound pit bull a half-mile down a steep mountainside, the Arizona Humane Society said.

When she reached the bottom, she was met by her husband and 10-year-old daughter.

In a letter to AHS, 10-year-old Jessi Davis said, "When my mom found our new dog on the mountain, my heart broke at the first sight of him. He was torn up. Everywhere."

The family brought the injured dog, now named Elijah, to AHS, where their Second Chance Animal Hospital treated the newest member of their family.

Jessi and the whole family is very excited to have Elijah in the family.

"I was so, so happy when I got to see him. When I found out we could adopt him and for good, I was thrilled!" Jessi said.
