Sulphur Dell stadium plans discussed at public meeting

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of people turned out Thursday to get their first look at plans for a new baseball stadium proposed for near downtown Nashville.

The stadium would be built at the historic Sulphur Dell site in north Nashville, and it would completely transform the surrounding area.

City officials held a public meeting at the Nashville Farmers' Market to discuss plans for the stadium that would become the new home of the Nashville Sounds minor league team.

"This area is one that people have overlooked for a little while, and it's been a little hidden gem, so to speak, but now that this growth is in here and we're expecting this baseball park, it's going to be fantastic," said Sheri Patterson, who lives in the nearby Hope Gardens neighborhood.

Still, coupled with the enthusiasm is concern about lighting, noise, parking and traffic.

But city leaders say they're already working to accommodate crowds with a proposed 1,000-space parking deck and by promoting downtown parking.

Many business leaders said they would welcome the crowds.

"Around Greer Stadium, it can be very limited in terms of what can be developed - as far as restaurants and other retail outlets. There is so many more opportunities here in the area in Sulphur Dell that's being proposed and really filling in the gap between Germantown and downtown Nashville," said Missy Acosta, with Delta Dental.

"Something of this magnitude is just the beginning. It will spark the development for this community that's been long long overdue," said Sharon Hurt, president and CEO of Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership (J.U.M.P).

The proposal is still in the early stages, so financing details haven't been released. But, the city says taxpayers won't take a hit.

"We haven't had major economic development in north Nashville in the last 50 years. This is important that we spend money in north Nashville for economic development here," said Metro Councilman Jerry Maynard.

City officials are still in talks with the state about acquiring the property for the stadium.

And they say they hope to file legislation with the council about details of property transactions and financing plans for the stadium in the next few weeks.
